The Gut Brain Connection: Could Your Gut Microbiome Be Affecting Your Sleep?

Updated: 3 days ago
Did you know your gut and brain are in constant communication?
This is what I was thinking about earlier this week as I lay wide awake at 3:00 am.
The trillions of microorganisms in your gut communicate directly with your central nervous system through what is called the gut-brain axis. This connection plays an important role in how well you sleep.
The microbes living in your digestive system help produce and influence substances such as serotonin, melatonin and GABA, all of which are involved in relaxation and healthy sleep patterns. 90 – 95% of serotonin is produced in the gut, just to give you an example of the importance of a healthy gut microbiome.
Your gut microbiome also communicates with your stress response. When things are out of balance, it may contribute to changes in cortisol, your main stress hormone, which can make it harder to fall asleep and/or stay asleep.
There is another interesting connection in that the vagus nerve, which is one of the longest nerves in the body, acts like a communication highway between your gut and brain. It carries messages in both directions to influence digestion, mood, stress, and sleep, while regulating the body's parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate and promoting relaxation to help transition the brain and body into restorative slumber.
Supporting your microbiome with plenty of fibre-rich, colourful whole foods, along with movement, and stress management, can all be part of the picture.
